An early-morning string of crimes that included three cities and along Interstate 64 began with a carjacking in Newport News around 2:15 Friday morning, police said.
It started with six people – five men and one woman – in a white van, three of whom police say jumped out of the van in the 1100 block of Garden Drive in Newport News and carjacked a silver Pontiac Grand Am with Virginia license plates.
The two cars then traveled together to the 900 block of Florida Street in Hampton, where they ended up in the midst of an altercation in which shots were fired at the white van.
Hampton Police spokeswoman Paula Ensley said the cars had left the scene by the time police responded.
Nearby, in the 500 block of Settlers Landing Road in Hampton, police arrested James Curtis Jones, 18, of the 800 block of 29th Street in Newport News; Kwamaine L. Davis, 18, of the 700 block of 48th Street in Newport News; and a 16-year-old Newport News female. They were charged with conspiracy to commit carjacking and will face related charges from State Police and Hampton police, authorities said.
At 3:41 a.m., Hampton police received a report of a robbery of two 18-year-old women in the 800 block of North St., Ensley said.
That’s when Hampton police put out the police radio broadcast about the stolen silver Grand Am with three people inside heading toward the interstate.
Before 4 a.m., a State Police trooper began following the Grand Am toward Tidewater Drive in Norfolk. Around 4:12 a.m., State Police tried to pull the car over, but the driver refused to stop, State Police spokeswoman Michelle Cotten said.
The car headed west and crashed at Bowdens Ferry Road, off Hampton Boulevard, Cotten said. The three people inside got out and ran, but were caught with the help of Norfolk police officers, Cotten said.
Bashawn Mclawrence, 18, of the 200 block of W. 27th St. in Norfolk; Terrell Rashaad Jones, 19, of the 800 block of 36th St. in Newport News; and Ernesto Smith Jr., 18, of the 4200 block of Madison Ave. in Newport News have all been charged by Hampton police with two counts of robbery and two counts of use of a firearm in commission of a felony.
Later, each was charged with gang participation in Hampton.
