Coast Guard to return ships to Navy today

The Coast Guard will return the patrol coastal ships Monsoon and Tempest to the Navy in a ceremony set for today at Little Creek Naval Amphibious Base.

The Monsoon has been on loan to the Coast Guard since October 2004 and the Tempest since December 2005, according to a news release. In that time, the cutters aided with Hurricane Katrina recovery efforts and helped fight drug smuggling, intercept illegal immigrants, and protect ports and waterways.

 

Naval officer leads fundraising for Marine marathon

Navy Lt. Pete Beuttenmuller is the top fundraiser so far for the Marine Corps Marathon team of Virginia’s Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

Beuttenmuller of Commander Task Group 20.20 at Norfolk Naval Base is training for the marathon, which will be held Oct. 26 in Washington. He joined the team after his wife, Amanda, was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s disease earlier this year.

Vets start Web site geared to new GI Bill law

Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America has launched a Web site, www.GIBill2008.org, to help veterans learn about the new GI Bill that passed earlier this year.

The site includes a benefits calculator, a frequently-asked-questions section, and the latest news as the GI Bill goes into effect.

 

Vaccinations for eligible families

School vaccinations are being offered as a walk-in service to military families at the immunization clinics at Portsmouth Naval Medical Center and the regional branch health clinics (Adm. Joel T. Boone, Sewells Point and Oceana), from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Immunizations are provided to eligible beneficiaries age 2 months and up. Patients are asked to bring their vaccination card so it can be updated. Information: (757) 953-2207.

 

From Fort Bragg to Fort Monroe

The Army chief of staff has announced that Brig. Gen. Arthur M. Bartell, deputy commanding general of XVIII Airborne Corps and Fort Bragg in Fort Bragg, N.C., will be assigned as commanding general of the Army Cadet Command at Fort Monroe in Hampton.
