VIRGINIA BEACH

Twenty-three dogs rescued from a West Virginia puppy mill will be offered for adoption today by the Virginia Beach SPCA.

The dogs, which include dachshunds, Jack Russell terriers and cocker spaniels, will be available from 12:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the SPCA, 3040 Holland Road. Many other dogs also will be available said Teresa Lamarche, community outreach director for the Beach's SPCA.

Officials from the local animal-adoption group drove to a Parkersburg, W.Va., kennel on Aug. 28 as part of an effort to rescue more than 1,000 dogs that were living in poor conditions.

About 115 dogs were brought to the Virginia Beach SPCA, where they underwent medical and behavioral assessments. Forty-two have been adopted and 16 placed in foster homes to improve their social skills, said Lamarche.

The remaining dogs rescued from West Virginia are being treated and assessed before they are put up for adoption, Lamarche said. She added that money and supplies have poured into the SPCA to help the dogs, and Farm Fresh provided hundreds of pounds of dog food.

Working with the puppy mill dogs was pure joy!

I am an SPCA volunteer and had the joy of working with the puppy mill dogs on Labor Day. Some were excited and playful, while other were timid and cowering - but all had endless amounts of love to give. It was so nice to know that these dogs who were used to living in horrible conditions were now in a healthy place and would soon be ready to find loving homes. I'm so glad the Va. Beach SPCA agreed to take on this huge endeavor.

A note to all who adopt these dogs....

Please extend the most unconditional love, patience and care to these dogs. These dogs need a forever home and much support to be the best they can be considering their early start. Learn all you can about caring for dogs that have been neglected. Love, patience and great care can turn their lives around and you will be blessed with a best friend that will never let you down.

Hugs to all who adopt these dogs.
