Norfolk State University's electronics and optical engineering programs have been accredited by ABET, the accrediting body for postsecondary programs in applied science, computing, engineering and technology education.
The accreditation signifies that the university's programs meet the standards established by the professions. According to the ABET Web site, schools in the United States volunteer to go through the process.
In a statement released by the university, the ABET visiting team cited Norfolk State for several strengths, including its lab and classroom facilities, the knowledge and skills of faculty and its rapport with students, the presence of a largely female faculty, including a female dean and university president, who can serve as role models.
Besides a master's degree in engineering and a doctoral degree in materials science and engineering, NSU offers bachelor's degrees in both electronics and optical engineering.
"We are thrilled about this accomplishment, which fulfills an important institutional goal," said Sandra DeLoatch, dean for the school of science and technology.
