VIRGINIA BEACH

One man was taken to a hospital this morning after fire broke out in a home at Southwind Condominiums.

The blaze, in a unit on the first floor, was reported about 4 a.m. in the 800 block of Spencer Court, said Battalion Chief Steve Lesinski, a fire department spokesman.

Firefighters rescued four people from two upstairs units because the entrance was blocked by heavy fire and smoke, Lesinski said. The flames were contained to the condo where the fire started, but three others have smoke damage. The blaze was under control by 4:21 a.m.

All together, four families were displaced by the blaze, Lesinski said. The American Red Cross was called to help the people whose units were damaged.

The fire, believed to be accidental, started in the living room of the condo on the first floor, but the cause remains under investigation, Lesinski said.

The condos are located off Norfolk Avenue.
