Newport News apartment fire displaces several families

A fire at The Arbors apartments on Mary Robert Lane displaced several families Thursday evening, WVEC-TV was reporting.

The fire was reported shortly after 5 p.m., dispatchers said.

At least nine families were left homeless by the dramatic blaze which burned through the roof of the building and was believed to be caused by a TV, the station reported this morning. Investigators are expected to be at the scene today.

The Red Cross was called to help the families, WVEC reported.
