A motorist shot at a Virginia Beach police officer before speeding away on South Independence Boulevard early Sunday morning, police said Monday.

The officer stopped a vehicle for reckless driving at 1:38 a.m. on South Independence Boulevard near South Plaza Trail, a police statement said.

The driver shot at the approaching officer, who was not hit, and then sped away, police said. The officer chased after the vehicle but lost sight of it in a nearby neighborhood, police said.

Police then found the vehicle abandoned.

Detectives said Monday that they were trying to locate an 18-year-old Virginia Beach man for questioning. They said Wednesday that they had found him and are continuing to investigate.

No charges have been filed.

Police asked that anyone with information call Crime Stoppers at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.
