VIRGINIA BEACH
Richard Flowers was sentenced Wednesday to 40 years for sexually assaulting a 6-year-old girl whose baby-sitters left her and her sister unattended.
The 25-year-old was found guilty in July of object sexual penetration, statutory burglary and abduction with intent to defile. He sneaked into the apartment on Maxey Drive, picked up the girl and carried her into a bedroom, where the assault took place.
Circuit Court Judge Stephen Mahan gave Flowers a 100-year prison term with all but 40 years suspended. The victim’s injuries were so severe she required medical attention, according to trial testimony.
Flowers, who maintained his innocence, met two teenage girls who were baby-sitting two girls in an apartment on June 24, 2007. After drinking alcohol and smoking marijuana that night, the 15-year-old girls left the apartment while the sisters slept on a couch in the living room.
