The presidential candidates aren't the only ones wooing your support.
Animal care groups in Norfolk want your vote, too.
Care2 - an online network that promotes community activism - is hosting the "America's Favorite Animal Shelter" contest and offering a $10,000 grand prize to shelters or rescue groups that gain the most support. There also are second- through fifth-place rewards. And each week a randomly selected shelter could win $1,000.
Norfolk-based groups in the running include All Miniature Pinscher Service, Animal Rescue of Tidewater, Norfolk Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, Rainbow Animal Rescue Inc. and Norfolk Animal Care Center, which recently has had the most votes in the city.
Laurelyn Flowers, coordinator of volunteers and human education program for the Norfolk Animal Care Center, said she's thrilled the shelter is a top vote-getter. If they were to win, the money could improve quality of life for animals at the facility as well as help expand its humane education program, she said.
No matter what happens, she said, the contest increases awareness about the needs of animals, importance of animal adoption and how the community can get involved.
As with a political election, you must first register to vote in this contest. But there are no lengthy debates or pointing of fingers. Just maybe a few barks and hisses.
Sign up at www.Care2.com and each person can vote once as well as post comments about a favorite group.
Deadline to vote is Nov. 1.
May the best paws win!
