Norfolk's Town Point Park to close for renovations

Posted to: News Norfolk

NORFOLK

Town Point Park will be closed to the public for the next eight months for major renovations, according to a news release from the city.

The $11.5 million renovations will begin Monday and be unveiled for the July 4th weekend with Norfolk’s annual Harborfest celebration. It’s the first time the 25-year-old waterfront park has ever gone through a major upgrade, the news release said.

Some of the park’s annual events will be relocated or rescheduled during the park’s closure.

Renovations will include improving the waterfront’s bulkhead and the electrical, water, sewer and storm-water systems. A new stage location should also improve lawn seating, sound, lighting and support facilities, the news release said. The park’s layout will also be improved with pathways for pedestrian access to the water and along Waterside Drive.

Town Point will also get new light fixtures, signs, interactive water fountains and landscaping.

Norfolk Festevents raised $1 million in private funds to support the project. Anyone who would like to contribute to the effort may make a tax-deductible contribution starting at $100 to sponsor any number of engraved, commemorative bricks, markers and plaques or a limited number of park benches and trees.

For more information, visit www.festevents.org or call (757) 441-2345.

Afram/Park

Harbor Fest is actually going to be almost a month later than normal next year because of the park renovations. The organizers of the Afram Festival just as easily could have arranged to move that party a month or two later as well. This has nothing, I repeat nothing, to do with race or the city government. Facts are a lovely thing aren't they?!

Race Not a Factor

The article states that the park is closed due to renovations. It is unfortunate that the Afram Fest had to be cancelled, but that's the way things happen. Race is not a factor here, and you guys need to stop bringing up race for every cancellation or failure that occurs in your life.

Norfolk thinks they are slick

Its amazing that the park will be open for HarborFest but not for Aframfest. Norfolk knew just what they were doing on this project. Well its your lost when it comes to revenue. Its funny how most of people that stay in that area complained about the noise but when it comes to Harborfest anything goes which attracts more drunk people and fights then any event Norfolk has. Oh your not going to see this on the news or in the paper like a black event just like you wouldn't see a black child on CNN missing on an Amber Alert because we don't matter. Back to the difference between Harborfest and Aframfest did I mention they even let off fireworks every year but you don't hear residents complain about that. Question, which one is louder music from Aframfest or fireworks from Harborfest? Then tell me if downtown citizens are playing fair or it modern day racist...
