Phony flier says Virginians vote on different days

FOLLOW-UP: Officials find source of fake election flier, won't press charges (Nov. 3, 2008)

RICHMOND

A phony State Board of Elections flier advising Republicans to vote on Nov. 4 and Democrats on Nov. 5 is being circulated in several Hampton Roads localities, according to state elections officials.

In fact, Election Day, for voters of all political stripes, remains Nov. 4.

The somewhat official-looking flier - it features the state board logo and the state seal - is dated Oct. 24 and indicates that "an emergency session of the General Assembly has adopted the follwing (sic) emergency regulations to ease the load on local electorial (sic) precincts and ensure a fair electorial process."

The four-paragraph flier concludes with: "We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause but felt this was the only way to ensure fairness to the complete electorial process."

No emergency action has been taken by the General Assembly. It is not in session and lacks the authority to change the date of a federal election.

State Board of Election officials today said they are aware of the flier but disavowed any connection to it.

"It's not even on our letterhead; they just copied the logo from our Web site," said agency staffer Ryan Enright, noting the flier has been forwarded to State Police for investigation as a possible incident of voter intimidation.

Election officials did not specify in which Hampton Roads localities the flier had been spotted.

State Police are aware of the complaint and are looking into it, said spokeswoman Corinne Geller.

In 2007, the General Assembly passed a law making it a Class 1 misdemeanor to knowingly communicate false information to registered voters about the date, time and place of the election or voters' precincts, polling places or voter registration statuses in order to impede their voting. The measure is one of the few such deceptive voting practice laws in the country, according to the watchdog group Common Cause.

sounds like a certain sects

of a certain party that is represented by a certain pachyderm is pulling out all the stops to ensure that Virginia stays red. I figure they'll find a way to blame this on ACORN or William Ayers.

Cue them

Cue the irrational generalizations...It's a VAST conspiracy, right?

Tradition

This thing makes the rounds every four years. It is nothing new.

Anyone dumb enough to fall for it probably shouldn't be voting anyway.

Anyone taking it seriously enough to issue a warning should take a deep breath and relax.

Nah, its a a host of petty

Nah, its a a host of petty little conspiracies just like this one. Surely we can agree this is an example for voter suppression, albeit a clumsy one? It's obvious from the dates it is meant to favor the right. Cue some hate monger from the right hailing this a fair test of competance to vote. 3,2,1 . . .

My prediction below came

My prediction below came true even prior to my post being approved. Thanks Ira!

Dem Dirty Tricks

It was probably put out by the Democratic party as insurance in case their candidate doesn't win. Then they can blame it all on the Republicans and justify the riots that would ensue from the spoiled entitlement crowd.

Its obviously a fake!

Its obviously a fake!

Everyone knows that only Libertarians are supposed to vote on Tuesday.

and Both! the Democrats and Republicans are supposed to vote on Wed!

Hey parker

Is this the first time you have seen this... I guess you got hit by an acorn on your pointy head if you think this is real and put out by any political party

Voting Machines are bigger danger

I have a far greater fear of the election being tanted by tampering with the voting machines. A computer Professor at Rutgers showed how to change the main processor chip in a locked voting machine in about 5 minutes. Cheating in an election used to take a lot of work. Now it only takes 5 minutes to change all the votes in one machine.
We need to get some help from India. They seem to do there elections with larger numbers of people and less chance for hacker fraud.

Dang, that vast conspiracy is at it again! Oh how I wish those honest and true Demowabbits would take over and just rid us of those bad old people so we could all sing Kum-by-ya as we pass the hat for Mr. Obama!

No Big Deal

Any one dumb enough to fall for this probably thinks that Furniture Store is REALLY going out of business this time.

And they probably believe that Charlie Falk is a great place to buy a car.

And if they believe all of that then they are probably voting for Obama.

good one

i am so glad to see that the insults came fast. not surprising though. don't be so sensitive and relax. if the name-calling helps prove your point, then i apologize for stirring such resentment within you and i hope you have a better day than you've had.

Unbelieveable

It is nothing short of amazing how low the RepubliCONS will stoop! Pathetic!

That's what you nObama

That's what you nObama supporters get for stealing all the McCain yard signs.

Gee parker, looking at the posts, looks like you stooped to name calling first. Perhaps you should follow your own advice?

Don’t worry folks. Nothing to see here. Move along.

It’s just one of many old traditional tactics from the bag of dirty tricks utilized by a certain political party trying once again to steal the election. By itself, it probably can’t do the job anyway. Only if used in concert with other tactics would there be a serious threat to a fair election. And if someone suggests that where there is smoke there’s fire, well they’re probably just being paranoid worry warts. Don’t pay any attention to them. Just go back to watching Fox News, the “fair and balanced” network where you can catch up on the latest evil atrocity being committed by that terrorist loving, America hating, baby killing, socialist, Marxist, fascist, Muslim(not that there’s anything wrong with that), Barack “Steve” Obama. By the way, I hear that when he ties his shoes, he always does the LEFT one first.

On the Lighter side...

Perhaps sometime in the distant past someone might have actually tried to make something like this work, but its been a well known joke for 20 years now. Such campaign tricks rarely work, but I did read of one in Readers Digest that did back in the days when TV was not 24 hours a day.

I don't remember which Banana Republic it was, but on the night before the election, the national TV Station gave both candidates a half hour to present their case at late in the evening. The candidates flipped a coin to determine the order.

The first candidate spoke for 23 minutes, then the national anthem played, followed by 2 minutes of a test pattern, then 5 minutes of static.

Assuming the broadcast day had ended, most people turned off their TV's and went to bed, leaving the second candidate with a tiny audience.

True? Who knows? But funny.

Might help McSame

If half of the Dems vote on the 5th, maybe McSame and his stewardess have a chance. Probably not

funny

The liberals are really ticked off about this. Probably because they know half of their votes are coming from people that would actually believe this flier.

Lack of Maturity

To those that resort to kindergarten behavior and use names like pachyderm, demowabbits, republicans, McSame and his stewardess – don’t sweat it. It’s obvious from your limited intellect that you’re not old enough, mature enough, or smart enough to make an informed choice on Election Day.

Why is it that any article that has anything to do with the candidates, their running mates, their family, their dogs, etc., always ends up with one side calling the other names?

Do the rest of us a favor – stay home on Election Day and watch Bugs Bunny. That seems to be right up your alley.

Desperate

If these right wing nuts are desperate enough to stoop to this nonsense, what is going to happen when Obama wins and the Democrats take full control of Congress? I can't see how these extremists can handle change!

Fantastic!

I guess some of the dummocrats, I mean democrats might fall for it. After all, they've fallen for Obama's rhetoric.

Just a joke, but not funny

This stupid effort comes out every election. It probably doesn't fool very many people.

But do you notice how it's always the Republicans who try to pull this? I've never seen a phony flier or e-mail or anything claiming that Democrats are to vote on the real election day and Republicans the day after.

Why? Because Republicans are the party of voter suppression. Democrats believe in having everyone vote.

I'm not blaming this stupid flyer on any official Republican effort. But Republicans are always the party of making voting harder through voter ID requirements, purges of voter rolls, lawsuits against early voting, challenges to voter eligibility, and other voter suppression efforts.

If you want open government with everybody voting, vote Democrat.

Comment

Very good Ric! Castigate the public at large for a sense of humor and imply republicans are cartoons in the same post...very sly! Really should lighten up though; anyone who takes this article seriously is wound just a bit too tight.

Let the investigation run its course....

before blaming anybody. This could possibly be the work of an individual, an underage computer whiz, who knows. Do not "pigeon-"hole an entire political party based on such limited information. I want to know where the fakes were distributed and exactly how many.

McSame and his stewardess....

Now that just plain cracked me up!!!!

This was great!

I'm glad someone has a sense of humor. I just home no-one believed it! HAHA.

Karl Rove

Has anyone seen Karl Rove in town lately?

The point being ignored!

A point that is being completely ignored here, is this flyer violates numerous state and federal laws. There should be an investigation into who printed and distributed this flyer. These people could be prosecuted under laws ranging from counterfeiting to impersonating government officials and agencies for using their names and logos. These same laws apply federally. There is also the matter of interfering in an election and civil rights violations. The list goes on and on. Garbage like this isn't going to stop until someone actually enforces the law and prosecutes the people responsible.

Name Calling?

RicM25798, how is using the terms 'pachyderm' and 'republican' an example of kindergarten behavior? I can only assume that you do not know that pachyderm is another word for elephant, which is the republican party's symbol. And I really don't get your problem with someone using the term republican, unless you are making a very poor reference to someone saying republiCONS in an earlier post. If you are going to try to make a point, could you please at the very least try to make sense? And try to stay away from the polls next week while you're at it.

Republicans would never cheat to win.....

never ever. They are, after all, the true american patriots. They have Jesus on their side, they don't need to cheat. LOL same old same old from the ugly white elephant........

Censorship

You know, I used to scoff when people posted that the VB Pilot censored posts....I thought, no way an independent newspaper would ever lower itself to do that and chalked it up to partisanship. Guess what? I was wrong. I have posted various thoughts both pro and con for both Democrats and Republicans. Negatives posts against Democrats have failed to see the light of day....negative posts against Republicans were posted no problem. If an VB Pilot editor reads this, would you please take the time to respond?

Anyone ignorant enough to

Anyone ignorant enough to believe this flyer should not be voting. Do you REALLY believe that the Republican Party would stoop? C'Mon! And last time I looked, Va was a battleground state....And HAS the election happened yet? I didn't think so, but from the looks of some of the comments here, it's like VA is going for Obama. Can we let the election happen FIRST please?

Comment

As Bill has mentioned, this "flyer" has been making the rounds for years.....all comments should be taken as humorous, right? Right, VB Pilot??

Comment

While I have no problem with Democrats or Republicans or any other legitimate political party, since I am not a member of any, I do have a problem with censorship. I would like to call out the VB Pilot editors who pass judgement on what posts they deign to be excluded from online discussions. If your decisions are based on political ideals, as seems abundantly apparent, then I question your role in our democracy and your responsibility to provide ALL the facts and opinions pursuant to a story you report on. If you do not chose to be a fair and unbiased arbiter of public opinion than you should declaim yourselves on your letterhead and bylines as a publication for all citizens, since you seem to serve only a segment that you define.

First you unleashed the hoax

First you unleashed the hoax in PA, now you release the hoax in VA. You
guys are really scared. One could only imagine if the flier was reversed
what we would be reading today.

I agree

Anybody dumb enough to fall for this needs to stay home on election day.

Same old tactic

This was a Democratic tactic in Chicago in the 1950's.

conspiracy

blame the jokers for something that has floated around for 30 years not a conspiracy they did this back in the 70's also.these politicians cant be blamed for everything that happens, but they can at least deny or condemn the people that are doing things like this.i think we are in for a shocking 7 years with the dynamic trio.this last administration had it for a few years and look at the mess it made.this much control should never be given to a single party ever again.i have never seen our politicians stoop to such lows to try and win an election and on both sides.the lawyers have ruined this country and that is what Washington is full of.it proves one thing if you have enough money you can buy anything.vote for who you think is the best candidate not with your emotions.i wish we had a better choice i would vote like a movie i saw one time,None Of The Above...

TOO FUNNY

This made me laugh, thanks for the morning funny!

A day late & a dollar short

I was amused as well. lol

REPUBLIDUMS

JEP23 WROTE;

The liberals are really ticked off about this. Probably because they know half of their votes are coming from people that would actually believe this flier.

REPLY;

Yes as opposed to half the Republicans who believe the earth is only 6000

yrs old and man tamed Dinosaurs to help plow the fields;and evolution is "the Devils" trick.

and the other half are arrogant[stupid] enough to believe this tactic will work.

"Stupid is as Stupid does" [from a man far smarter than any Politician(:

sheesh

it is amazing how fast this became some great republican conspiracy designed to keep the democrats from voting. Just goes to show the mindset....same ol' same ol' there is always someone trying to keep you down isn't there? Maybe it is time to show some responsibility for your own actions. Everyone knows when the the polls are open for voting. (anything any different is either mail-in absentee balloting or early voting in some states) If you actually fell for this, shame on you. It's nobody's fault but your own. (I have it on good authority that this was perpetrated by the democratic party so that they could blame the republicans) Now, go away and leave my tin foil hat alone. Get your own or your mind will be taken over by the little green men.

Republicans don't cheat! Huh!

Two elections later, we still have the same miserable "cheats" trying to rig the election again.
Al Gore lost the election by 6 or 7 electorial votes, It all came down to Florida - Jeb Bush and the attorney general there.
Wow. this country is going to hell in a handbag.

No matter who did it in the

No matter who did it in the 60s, or what side of the fence you're on, or who is actually doing it now—you'd have to be ignorant not to see what its purpose is, which is to keep Dems from voting. Plain and simple. Of course you'd be ignorant to blindly follow these instructions without some sort of follow-up or confirmation but whoever is doing this is depending on that. People might be ignorant but THEY STILL HAVE THE RIGHT TO CHOOSE.

confussion

I know this to be a true flier, because I sent it to all my democrate buddies and they said they were glad to get that news because they didn't have a clue what day they were supposed to vote, or for who.

Phony Voter bulletin

If this is being investigated - and if the perpetrator of this misinformation is discovered - will there be prosecution?

All this phony concern about Acorn (whose false registrations won't result in a single fraudulent vote) is a screen for this kind of true voter fraud. And the people who attempt to defraud others of their right to vote should sit in jail.

Pathetic

Yet another pathetic example of the RepubliCON experience.

Two faced

Resq, I wonder how you would have reacted if the flier had informed Democrats to vote on the 5th. I think we both know: rage. Hypocrisy is alive and well, isn't it, Resq?

Actually DuPont

I would have taken it for exactly what it was, somebody's idea of a joke. But then again, like I said, I have on my tin foil hat to make sure that the aliens don't plant all those conspiracy ideas in my head. It is so sad to see so many people actually take this whole thing seriously. As stated, you would have to be entirely out of touch, with absolutely no education to not know that the election is held on the firt Tuesday, after the first Monday of November. Were you sleeping during Civics class?

oh, yeah, dupont, you got me there....

I had no idea that the elections are always the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November. Some people are actually able to discern a prank when the see it. This has absolutely nothing to do with politics, other than the election is near and made a good target. Actually I believe there is a bigger lesson to be learned from this, and it has something to do with common sense.

Hey, if you still think that the republicans did this to keep democrats from voting, I've got some land south and a little east of Suffolk to sell you.

Resq

Did my hypocrisy remark hit too close to home? >;-)

Amazed

Folks, some form or another of this "flier" has been bouncing around the Internet since as far back as 2000. Physical forms even before then. It's like many other Urban Legends or spam - false. If you're all worked up over this, you must also still be waiting for Bill Gates to send you $100 for every e-mail you forward. Let me know how that works for you.

nah it was a computer glitch

lost my connection, thought I'd lost my post. nothing you wrote does any more than make me chuckle....so, how about that land, you interested? 'scuse me, gotta go make some adjustments to my tinfoil hat.

America: the next Third World Country?

Between all the false registrations, voting computers that are either faulty or can be easily manipulated to come up with incorrect voting records, eligible voters being purged from the voting rosters, our ridiculous system for financing political campaigns and now this where someone or some people are trying to fool people into not voting on the correct date, America is looking more and more like a corrupt Third World country.

Prime Example

Everyone needs to take an IQ test before being allowed to Vote!!! Part of the paper today: Follow the Money!! 125 Billion of the 700 Billion so called bailout 25 Billion Citi Group, 25 Billion Wells Fargo, 25 Billion Bank of America, 25 Billion JP Morgan Chase, 10 Billion Goldman Sachs, 10 Billion Morgan Stanley, 3 Billion Bank of New York Mellon, 2 Billion State Street. What a wholesale theft of taxpayers money and most of you Idiots out there think this is a good idea. Stupid is as Stupid does as Forest Gump said.

Like it or not, voting is a right, not an IQ test

resq, I'm sure you understand that if you don't back up your comment stating "I have it on good authority that this was perpetrated by the democratic party so that they could blame the republicans", we all assume you're lying.

As we all know, the right to vote is not an IQ test. You may may not be old enough to remember that the Civil Rights Act outlawed poll taxes and literacy tests. I repeat, voting is a RIGHT. If someone does not know the date for voting, are you suggesting they should be denied their right to vote? Let's dig deep and see who the elitist really is.

A summation of RESQ's post

An intentionally false and illegal flier that has been circulating in the area which attempts to mislead democratic-leaning voters into missing the opportunity to vote is strictly the fault of Democrats. A perfectly logical argument for the tinfoil-hat club.

Resq

Resq, it's hard to take someone seriously who wears a tin-foil hat. So, go now and play with your Star Wars action figures like a good little child.

New Flyer

I just found another flyer: an emergency session of the General Assembly has adopted the follwing (sic) emergency regulations to ease the load on local electorial (sic) precincts and ensure a fair electorial process...All people who think that they are smart, vote on wed.
I think this will filter pretty good!

I agree

I agree on your comment and it also helps me a lot in knowing more things. It will surely be a help in doing my thesis for my thesis writing class. thanks and keep it up!

thanks

thank
