Police have charged a woman shot by an officer last month with maiming, attempted wounding of a law enforcement officer and using a knife during a felony.

On Nov. 15 at 1:30 a.m. police responded to a violent argument between a man and a woman in the 400 block of Youngs Mill Lane, according to police.

The woman was armed with a large kitchen knife, which officers ordered her to drop, police said. At some point an officer shot the woman, who was then taken to a hospital where she was listed at the time in critical condition. The man was treated for stab wounds.

On Tuesday Bonni Hess, 23, was released from the hospital and charged in connection with the incident, police said. She is in the Newport News City Jail.

The officer has been placed on administrative leave while the shooting is being investigated.
