NORFOLK
A man will serve 15 years for murder and a weapon charge, a judge ruled Friday.
Corey J. Smith stopped his trial in September to enter an Alford plea to charges that he killed Keith D. Gordon, 20, after a car accident on Campostella Road in August 2007. The plea meant he did not admit guilt but acknowledged a prosecutor had evidence to convict him.
Judge John C. Morrison sentenced Smith to 12 years for the murder and three years for the weapon charge and imposed an additional suspended sentence of 18 years. Smith's plea agreement called for him to serve no more than 20 years.
A co-defendant is to appear in court next week.
