NORFOLK
One person was killed and another seriously injured this morning when the vehicle they were in overturned during a chain-reaction crash on Northampton Boulevard.
Police have not yet identified the motorists involved in the wreck, which occurred about 1:30 a.m.
According to a preliminary investigation, a vehicle carrying three adults was heading west in the 5700 block of Northampton Boulevard when it was struck from behind by an unknown vehicle, said Norfolk police spokesman Chris Amos.
The impact of the collision caused the first vehicle to veer into the eastbound lanes of traffic. There, it smashed into a third vehicle, which careered onto its roof.
The driver was pronounced dead and the passenger of the third vehicle were taken to a hospital, which life-threatening injuries. The three motorists involved in the wreck were being treated, but their injuries do not appear to be life-threatening, Amos said.
The unknown vehicle which started the chain of events was traveling at a high rate of speed, Amos said.
The incident remains under investigation.
