JAMES CITY

A judge has cleared a James City County farmer of an animal cruelty charge in the drownings of at least five feral cats in 2007.

Donald Curtis Hunt was convicted in Williamsburg-James City County District Court in late 2007. He appealed the conviction to circuit court.

On Thursday, he entered an Alford plea to the misdemeanor charge in circuit court. The plea means Hunt didn't admit guilt but acknowledged that prosecutors have enough evidence to convict.

Circuit Judge Samuel Powell then dismissed the charge. The judge cited Hunt's clean criminal record, his family's community involvement and Hunt's volunteerism since his arrest.

Hunt was accused of disposing of the feral cats on his James City farm by drowning them in a pond.
