PORTSMOUTH
Police searched a Cash Express of Virginia office on Tyre Neck Road in connection with a gambling investigation in Newport News.
The search warrant, filed by a Newport News detective on Thursday, sought items such as machines and books related to illegal gambling. Police took a machine and miscellaneous paper work, according to the court document.
Newport News police spokesman Lou Thurston said the investigation is continuing and no charges have been filed.
According to the search warrant, police received reports of illegal gambling at a Cash Express in the 800 block of Old Oyster Point Road, Newport News.
Undercover officers entered the business on several occasions and purchased pre paid cards for computerized games. One officer was allowed to cash out after increasing the value of his card by playing the game.
Police confiscated money, 20 game machines and a card reader for the machines in Newport News, Thurston said.
Investigators had information that the Portsmouth business is related to or a regional office of the Newport News business, according to the warrant.
