A great spot for lunch in Norfolk

If you work or wander near or around Downtown Norfolk, there’s a new lunch option that will leave you feeling fine, body and soul and bank account.

Over at 5 Points Community Farm Market (just south of the Norfolk Zoo) the Get Fresh Café recently got a new hood and stove, which means an expanded menu stuffed with healthy choices made with foodstuffs that are as local as possible.

I was over there Saturday morning where offerings were scrawled on two chalkboards, one for carnivores and one for vegetarians.

On the carnivore chalkboard : Angus cheeseburger, $2.95; organic Weeping Radish hot dog, $1.75; “huge” ¼ pound bison hot dog, $4.99; one-quarter of an applewood smoked chicken with a side, $3.95.

The vegetarian chalkboard offered: vegan sloppy Joe, $4.50; un-chicken salad, $4.50; portabella mushroom burger, $.450; cucumber sandwich, $1.

Plus, a nearby counter sported full of tall cherry, blueberry and blackberry pies that looked like Grandma made them, from the Sugar Plum Bakery, $3.50 the slice.

In an uncharacteristically herbivore mood, I ordered the “tomato, hummus and spinach sandwich ($4.50). It’s served on a choice of bread – I chose multigrain – and came with a side of delicious rosemary potato salad. It was yummy and on the hottest day of the year so far, didn’t leave me feeling weighed down.

The café has an open kitchen with a few seats at the “bar” and several tables. Service is uber friendly – that’s Kristina Hudson in the picture serving my sandwich with a smile.

The other great thing about eating here is the shopping. Pick up some buffalo burgers for dinner, or fresh local flowers for the kitchen table or fresh local produce or some of that Reggie’s Banana Pudding Sauce out of the refrigerator case, which I sure do love.

The market is at 2500 Church Street in Norfolk. It’s open Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Thursday & Friday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
