WASHINGTON
They came, they met, they drank. They did not apologize.
The much-anticipated beer summit of President Barack Obama, Harvard scholar Henry Louis Gates Jr. and Sgt. James Crowley of the Cambridge Police Department in Massachusetts took place Thursday night. It was accompanied by minute-by-minute reporting from the White House press corps, countdown clocks from the cable news networks, and a last-minute addition by the White House in the form of Vice President Joe Biden.
After 10 days of near nonstop media coverage of a case that launched a thousand news stories about race, the protagonists sat down for less than an hour at an outdoor table across from the Oval Office.
"What you had today was two gentlemen who agreed to disagree on a particular issue," Crowley said during a 15-minute news conference after the session.
"We didn't spend too much time dwelling on the past, and we decided to look forward." Gates said in an interview. "I don't think anybody but Barack Obama would have thought about bringing us together."
The two men and their families, who had accompanied them to the White House, first encountered each other in the White House library, while the groups were on individual tours of the White House on Thursday afternoon.
"Nobody knew what to do," Gates said. "So I walked over, stuck out my hand and said, 'It's a pleasure to meet you.' That broke the awkwardness."
Crowley added that the families "had continued the tour as a group." He described the interaction as very cordial.
Gates concurred, saying: "We hit it off right from the beginning. When he's not arresting you, Sgt. Crowley is a really likable guy."
By the time the two men began their meeting with Obama, they could already report progress and told the president that they had made plans to lunch together soon.
"I am thankful to Professor Gates and Sergeant Crowley for joining me at the White House this evening for a friendly, thoughtful conversation," Obama said in a statement. "Even before we sat down for the beer, I learned that the two gentlemen spent some time together listening to one another, which is a testament to them."
The addition of Biden was interesting, for a number of reasons. Biden was able to draw on his credibility with blue-collar, labor union America and his roots in Scranton, Pa., to add balance to the photo op that the White House presented: two black guys, two white guys, sitting around a table.
Earlier in the day, Obama had razzed reporters for obsessing on the theatrics of the meeting, saying he was "fascinated with the fascination" over the issue, which has been boiling since Crowley, responding to a call about a possible break-in, arrested Gates on a charge of disorderly conduct even though he had ascertained that Gates was in his own home.
Obama added fuel to the fire a week later when he said in response to a question at a news conference that the Cambridge police had "acted stupidly" in arresting Gates, a word choice that he later said he regretted.
"I noticed this has been called the beer summit," Obama said after meeting earlier Thursday with President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo of the Philippines. "It's a clever term, but this is not a summit, guys. This is three folks having a drink at the end of the day and hopefully giving people an opportunity to listen to each other."
The media were allowed a peek at the gathering for only about 40 seconds - and from a distance so great that reporters could not hear a word that was said.
Nonetheless, some details emerged:
Obama and Biden were in shirtsleeves. Crowley and Gates wore suits.
The four drank out of beer mugs. Obama had a Bud Lite, Crowley had Blue Moon, Gates drank Sam Adams Light and Biden, who does not drink, had a Buckler nonalcoholic beer. ( Biden had a piece of lime in his beer. Crowley, for his part, kept with tradition and had a slice of orange in his Blue Moon.)
The four men munched on peanuts and pretzels out of small silver bowls.
Reporters and photographers had positioned themselves on the grounds waiting for the gathering to start, when a white family of five showed up. Were they the Crowleys? "Excuse me, may I ask who you are?" one reporter shouted.
"Not who you think," came the reply.

the pilot should have a daily racist forum.
You almost do everyday anyway.
Beer Summit
I can see it in the headlines of every liberal newspaper, WHITE POLICE OFFICER HANDCUFFS OBAMA & GATES TO TREE ON WHITE HOUSE LAWN......This beer summit is nothing more than a big PR move on Obama's part and overshadows the real truth that both Obama and Gates are guilty of racial profiling. If you really listen to Obama's attempt to correct his position, he never said he was sorry, only that he used the wrong choice of words and should have attempted to get the full story before he spoke. Hopefully both Obama and Gates listened and learned something from Officer Crowley about racial profiling and supporting your police department. I guess Biden was there to take notes for Obama and Gates or was he there to serve the beer?
Commercial
How long before we see the commercial!

The article read, "The addition of Biden was interesting, ..., to add balance to the photo op that the White House presented: two black guys, two white guys, sitting around a table."
Yesterday the news went out of their way to say a bi-racial president was getting a black man and a white man together for a teaching lesson. Now, in today's NY Times article, he has magically became black again. So which is it? Is he finally going to be bi-racial, or is he now black?
Which is it to you?
Why is it important?
it's bud light
Lite is a trademarked Miller brand name.
Geezz..
From the article:
"The addition of Biden was interesting, for a number of reasons. Biden was able to draw on his credibility with blue-collar, labor union America and his roots in Scranton, Pa., to add balance to the photo op that the White House presented: two black guys, two white guys, sitting around a table."
I wonder how many tax payer provided dollars went to the coffers of the consultants who came up with that? Oh yes, I'm sure everyone picked up on the attempted symbolism. I think it was a decision by Obama to look at Gates while pointing at Biden and say: "you think you have some problems with white people? Look at what I'M stuck with!"
it's a well know fact
It's a well known fact that no matter what Obama or Biden do or say, republicans aren't going to like it.
I'm sorry your pals from the previous 8 years aren't still around, but we listened to the lies of those 2 idiots far too long.
Maybe you can relax and let the current administration do their job, it certainly can't be any worst than Bush & Chaney plus Rove.
I agree there, Gertz...
about the current admin actually trying to do the job they were elected for, but I don't think guzzling brews on the taxpayers dime to compose some sort of self-indulging 'teaching moment' reaches that ideal! Maybe to you it does, but certainly not for anyone who can actually think on their own!
Per your point about 'not being worse than Bush/Cheney', I think it's obvious that the record shows that they have already exeeded any excesses on their part. I'll give Obama this, he's the possible best thing to happen for Bush's legacy. He's making Bush and company look like genuine cheapskates!
So how's that change coming there, Gertz? Hmmm?
Perpetual Hypocrisy
It's also a well known fact that whatever Bush or Cheney said or did, liberals weren't going to like it. So how is it any different from your statement? It's also common knowledge that a double standard was, and is, applied. Liberals get a pass, conservatives get excoriated; everywhere except Fox News.
Those of us with brains don't blindly follow the Party (either one) the way you seem to. Bush lied, and now Obama lies. Cheney lied, Biden lies (and is also busy trying to eat his own foot every single day). It has nothing to do with the D or R after their name.
Oh, and we conservative will never relax and let this administration turn us into a socialist backwater. We'll go kicking and screaming, and maybe not at all! Bush didn't do such a great job, but Obama is doing worse by far. And in such a short time (thanks to all the rushed legislation). He's already surpassing Carter as "Worse President Ever".
