Local anesthesiologist Joseph V. Mirenda, 49, died Tuesday morning in a bicycle crash in Harrisonburg, state police said today.
Mirenda was riding his bicycle west on Port Republic Road about 10:45 a.m. when a 2004 Ford Taurus struck him from behind, said Sgt. Les Tyler, a state police spokesman. He died of his injuries on the scene, he said.
The incident is under investigation, Tyler said. It occurred on a two-lane road, he said.
Mirenda was identified as the victim Wednesday.
Mirenda was a cardiac anesthesiologist who’d worked for Anesthesia Specialists on South Rosemont Road since 2003, said an administrator for the company.
When the crash occurred, he was riding his bike 50 miles from Wintergreen to James Madison University to visit his son, The Daily News-Record in Harrisonburg reported.
