Carbon monoxide in Beach home sends 5 people to hospital

VIRGINIA BEACH

One adult and four children were taken to a hospital this morning after high levels of carbon monoxide were created by a portable generator inside their home.

Firefighters were called to the home in the 1000 block of Kenya Lane about 12:20 a.m., said Battalion Chief Tim Riley. The generator was being under a home that didn't have power.

All five people have been released from a hospital and are expected to be fine, Riley said. Three other people who had gone inside the home went to the hospital on their own to be checked as a precaution.

Firefighters recommend using portable generators outside, at least 25 feet away from a home, and installing carbon monoxide alarms inside. Generators also should not be used in garages.
