A man wanted in connection with a shootout with police officers last week surrendered to police this afternoon.

Dwayne Anthony Scott, 32, of Newport News, was wanted for questioning as a witness to the shootout that occurred Wednesday night in the 400 block of Manor Road, according to a Newport News police news release. He was also facing charges of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He turned himself in about 4 p.m. today.

About 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, police said three officers approached a vehicle at Woodview apartments and two occupants got out of the vehicle. As the driver, Antonio Johnson, 34, of Norfolk, fired shots at the officers, the second man, Scott, was seen running from the area, the police news release said. One of the officers was struck in his protective vest and in one of his legs.

The two uninjured officers returned fire and the driver got back into the car and drove off, heading north on Warwick Boulevard, police said.

One officer stayed with the injured officer and the third pursued the shooter, the news release said. During the pursuit, however, the shooter’s vehicle left the road in the 15900 block of Warwick Blvd. and crashed into a stand of trees. Johnson was found dead in the vehicle, a hand gun lying near him, police said. The Medical Examiner’s office determined he shot himself to death. He died of a single gunshot wound.
