Side note in closing – I

Side note in closing – I feel this is a perfect example of why people work in Norfolk then drive away with their paychecks to Chesapeake and VA Beach – those cities provide a better quality of life for families – Norfolk could do it too – they just won’t – it’s not a priority to the leaders and it seems we’ve accepted it…

Are we still interested in a solution? cont2

The FP board is right now one of the best in it’s history – the perfect setting for Norfolk to not only save this league, but has potential to improve the lives and communities for even more Norfolk residents. Seriously, City of Norfolk–would you please stop pointing the finger and talking about how mean the Navy is being–the fact of the matter is–we have to go–please come up with a solution that is going to actually work. the Fleet Park board proposed a similar solution at Lakewood, but that made the residents grumpy… Why do we care if 1 civic league doesn’t want extra traffic or think the lights might be too bright?? Every objection they had – has a feasible solution/alternative… We are talking about the potential to improve our city and affect hundreds to thousands of people. How are people going to feel when those same kids are robbing your house or caught up in drugs or gangs because they had nothing better to do and some don’t even have positive influences in their lives!! There has to be some better options for this league than a move to a location that just isn’t feasible for a good portion of the families.

Are we still interested in a solution?

I am interested to see if this discussion continues. This past weekend the championship games were played/all star teams were announced. For the final season, there was a very small turnout and not even a closing ceremony. Where were all the supporters to ‘save the park’?!? We all know this is not new news–Norfolk has had ample time to work this, but while we were giving our occasional scattered opinions about FitReps, potential risks, safety etc-the city "waited out" the Navy and when USN didn’t waiver–Norfolk gave a last minute-weak solution... Norfolk can do better-why aren't we holding them responsible to solve this? Cities around us have top notch mulit-plex facilities that benefit masses of kids in a variety of activities.

Oh, and why is it so

Oh, and why is it so important to build new restaraunts that nobody will visit but it is not important to build new little league complexes that afeect children from the ages of 4-5 to 17-18? People these days...

Amazing

15 years ago when A-6 Intruders were flying over doing touch-and-go's every two minutes, the risk was OK. Now it's unsafe. One writer is right, give the city 3 years to find an alternative. In that time, the current Captain and his Admiral will get transferred and the new guys will find some other mark to make. Face it, we are paying for 3,000 Captains and 400 Admirals and we have less than 300 ships. They've got to find SOMETHING to do to get a good FITREP for their next promotion.

Personally, I think Fleet

Personally, I think Fleet Park should move because they are right next to the Naval Base, just as Ocean View (the new NAS Little League) had to move because of safety hazards or some made up reason. Fleet Park might have to share the Azalea Little League complex with Azalea and Ocean View. I dont see why Norfolk isnt trying to find a complex out of there city, for example a facility in Virginia Beach or the section of Chesapeake in District 8 or try making a complex father away from the more populated section of Norfolk, in a less hazardous area. What confuses me is why they did not bring this issue up earlier and it just came up recently...?

Fleet Park

The Navy for whatever reason, wants the Little League out. Forget about being good neighbors; the kids are on their own. As to the safety issue, why not just shut it down immediately? The answer, of course, is that the risk is low, and the safety issue is a pretext.

Fine; the Little League will try to get some help from the city and start over. Virginia Beach and Newport News have first class baseball complexes; Norfolk can as well. However, funding, land, organization and building are not done overnight.

The least the Navy can do is extend its eviction so that the kids that it has turned out (1/3 Navy kids, by the way) will have somewhere to go. Extend the eviction to 2015 at least to give the host city a chance to fix the Navy snub.

oh yeah

Oh yeah, and by the way, since the navy owns the land, they should pay back to norfolk the money used for improvements; otherwise, it certainly could look like the navy is seeing it as fixed up now and they want it for their own use.

ballfield

Here's my thing: what area in hampton roads ISN'T a crash zone? Any place where aircraft of any kind fly to me is a potential crash zone, and that covers every place in this area. I thinkthe navy is either suddenly backpeddling after realizing they've been screwing up all these years ( maybe someone has threatened legal action and this is navys way of defusing it) or they simply want the land for another use and see the ballfield and kids activities as expendable to the public.
