Should add...
another option:
Hell no.
no
the weather forecasters do not even know if it will hit us 36 hours out...
Hurricane Evacuation
Yes, Traffic is a mess in Hampton Roads, but we are given plenty of warning. If people actually get out when it is recommended, there should no problems. People need to not wait until the last minute.
Evacuation
LOL...I haven't lived up here that long but I can tell you this much...no, you couldn't and wouldn't be able to evacuate given the road conditions you have around here. I grew up in Wilmington, NC and let me tell you...we gave ourselves 48 to 36 hours to haul you know what out of town and I suspect it would take the people aroud here a whole lot longer to do the same.
Hurricane evacuation
Are you kidding me? Just look at the Gawd-awful mess we have on our roads every day! Between the numerous permanent construction projects and the massive amount of traffic on the roads, there's no way Hampton Roads could be evacuated rapidly.
NO Way
As much effort that's been put in to evac routes, too many idiot drivers, and too many will wait til last minute. I'd just hunker down I think and stay put, I feel fairly wall protected here in chesapeake, not in a flood zone.
The sky is falling..........
With the way the media hypes any weather event we get people have come to the point we don't believe what we're told. I know one day we're going to get hit but with the constant "the sky is falling go buy food and generators at places we sell ads to"......... we're not going to believe them when it does. And who's to blame for that?
I agree with many of you here.
And here are my points/questions:
1. Officials better be ready with a fleet of tow trucks to pluck broken down vehicles, claustrophobic drivers, and anything else out the tunnels and major junctions to the highway to keep everybody moving.
2. I've always wondered how long it takes for officials to know when they can safely have traffic go West in the East-bound lanes of 64. Sounds like a lot of manpower and a lot of time. Decision to evacuate can't be last minute.
3. If we're evacuated, I imagine the Coastal Carolinas will as well. I hope very few of them come THIS way to get out. And if it's tourist season...wow
Could we evacuate in time?
Seriously? Paleeeease! Not with our roads, and definitely not the way we, I mean, yall drive. And if we were evacuating due to a hurricane, throw rain into this equation and we'll definitely not make it outta here!
Thumbs up if you think HR has some of the worst drivers.
Thumbs down if you're one of them!
evacuation
Several issues:
1. Hurricanes reach VA from the SOUTH. US 58 not the right direction to evacuate
2. US 460 runs west. A good direction but not suggested Why?
3. All other routs are over or under water (bridges and tunnels). US 13 along the Easter Shore requires a long trip, leaving early and at least 1 tank of gass. 64 up the Peninsula. The vast majority of South Side VA plan to use this route. No problem. Leave before the gates are closed, accidents occur and tempers are short. 4 days probably good or before storms direction is decided.
What can we do?
{1) Notify your elected officials know you want action. Time for discussion is over. (2) Understand that any action will take several years and cost money. (3) Be willing to pay additional taxes. Yes taxes! Santa does not deliver roads etc. OUR HEALTH AND SAFETY IS AT STAKE!
