Swimming advisory set at Kitty Hawk Bay

KITTY HAWK, N.C.

North Carolina environmental health officials are advising swimmers to avoid a section of Kitty Hawk Bay after testing revealed that bacteria levels in the water exceed the state and Environmental Protection Agency's recreational water quality standards.

A sign that advises against swimming was posted Thursday in the jet ski-riding area near the wildlife ramp in Kill Devil Hills, according to a news release from the North Carolina Division of Environmental Health. The advisory is intended to affect water within 200 feet of the sign.

The results of tests taken Wednesday revealed that levels of enterococci bacteria found in the water exceed the levels considered safe for recreational swimming by state and federal standards.
