I like diversity but....
I live in Norfolk because it's a diverse vibraint city. But I have to agree with Mr. Webb, these programs are outdated or should be better focused. I have 2 sons born in the 1980s and they weren't part of the ugly jim Crow world but have to step aside and let a multitude of others go to the head of the line when applying to colleges, getting a fereal job, or federal contracts. It's senseless and counter-productive. No one I know will question affirmation action for fear of being labled a racists.
Let's focus it for those people of color born in the USA
It's been an Outdated Program for A While..
You can go to any Agency ... and see it is FULLY intergrated. Social Services, Court house, City Jail, DMV, Virginia Employment Commsion, ANY School, City Hall, City Council, Public Works, ... And Private business is the same. There was a time for Diversity, or EEO ... or Affirmative Action .. Whatever you want to call it... that time has come and pass. Keeping these type programs is just creating more ... Diversity instead of Unity. The same thing holds true for Our Schools. Teaching "Black History Month" creates a "mind set" in the children you are teaching. "They" are different. And makes other kids wonder ...Where is MY History month?? Native Americans? Latinos? Jewish? Asians? They all have a place in AMERICAS HISTORY. ( Sorry Native Americans... You should get a little more attention...since it was your land we took ..)
But ENOUGH is Enough ..
I'm Fighting for My Country ...Teaching My Kids to Think Like Americans ... EDUCATE! EDUCATE! EDUCATE! Your Children!!!
Smartest thing I have ever
Smartest thing I have ever heard him say. Sounds like he is trying to get ready for his re-election.
AGREE
I guess to win re-election here in VA, he has to put the white hood back on
White Hood
What an ugly thing to say about Jim Webb and the wonderful people of Virginia. Do you think white Virginians will only vote for Jim Webb if he favors white people and wears a hood representing the clan? Do you think that Virginians of hispanic origin will only vote for Jim Webb if he wears a sombrero? Or blacks will ONLY vote for him if he sports dread locks? We are trying to get past racism, ALL RACISM, and in one sentence you condemn white Virginians as only voting for white leadership. Why? Mr. Webb wants fairness and equality for ALL CITIZENS. Now if you aren't a citizen, you aren't going to be real pleased with Mr. Webb but I see absolutely nothing wrong and everything right with people being treated equally and that means white, black, Hispanic, Asian, European, Australian, Canadian, etc. AS LONG AS YOU ARE A CITIZEN OR ON THE PATH TO CITIZENSHIP THROUGH LEGAL MEANS.
Equal Opportunity
I find it interesting that what used to be called "Equal Opportunity" is now called "Diversity." I guess that having the word "Equal" shoved back in some peoples' faces wasn't convenient.
Equal opportunity does not always mean equal advancement or equal hiring. It's equal opportunity. Everyone has the opportunity to do what it takes to be qualified for a job. And if they are qualified, then they have an equal opportunity to get the job.
There is nothing equal about forcing diversity. Discrimination works both ways. Race or gender shouldn't play ANY part in hiring. It shouldn't be an advantage or a disadvantage.
"yesssss........"
AMEN...... Love your break down....of words, "the magic trick of words" & it looks like people are waking up, based on the pole percentage & the remarks w/comments!!!! We the people, little people to some...."ain't" gonna take it any more! Our Governmental officials "BOTH SIDES", More then less, of all levels: City on up to the top have played the race card, over & over....AND OVER....pitting us like dogs since the civil war! The political parties seem to have a pattern of using the people of America to gain votes/power & ahhhh, the game is over! We are all Equal; We all are proud Americans that wish to be able to provide for self & family. Once Americans RE-Learn the FACTS of how we, the people were built as a Nation, then things will all fall into place: For over 50 yrs., our schools have DISSOLVED many important FACTS of our building just for the purpose of control, hence, "Mis-guiding words", etc. Disolving this program will be a step in the right direction & replace w/a solution of improvement for equality; self! We need Civilian programs; EDUCATION w/our TRUE history & FAMILY building.
Argument is based on a false premise
The argument is based on a false premise.
Everyone has the opportunity to do what it takes to be qualified for a job. This statement is false in that people are limited in their opportunities by there place of birth and social-economic status. That being said "seeking diversity" does not necessarily mean "giving preference." To some it means making an effort to get the message out to as diverse population as possible. Holding professional recruitment fairs in areas with large minority populations. Getting the NAACP to help with police recruitment. Diversity diosnt have to mean lowering standards just widening the search area.
standards
Take a look around.Norfolk,Chesapeake,Portsmouth & Va.Beach have all lowered their standards for hiring and recruiting Police and Fire Departments.
interesting
There are still companies that exclude qualified minorities from advacements. In most cases people will not file a discrimination claim because they are fearful of loosing thier job. Where I work it is the one in one out unspoken rule. The business is not reflective of the community and this has been going on for years. So if your are going to take issue with this maybe you should ask yourself is my company fair and does everyone have the same opportunity to advance if they are QUALIFIED.
