NORTH CAROLINA

A 10-year-old Maryland boy survived being stabbed in the abdomen by a stingray barb in North Carolina's Outer Banks.

Candace Tokar of Thurmont, Md., says her family was watching a fisherman remove a ray's barbed stinger earlier this month when the barb snapped off and flew through the air and stabbed her son, Quentin. The barb that hit Quentin's liver was removed the next day and he spent four days at a hospital before returning home.

But he was later admitted to Frederick Memorial Hospital and Johns Hopkins Children's Center after an infection from bacteria on the sea creature's body spread.

The Tokars are keeping the 4-inch stingray barb in a medical jar, but they plan to encase it in something permanent.

The kid didn't "lose his liver"

The barb was removed from the liver. We would, most likely, be reading his obit if he had lost his liver. As far as killing rays and skates, I have seen this disgrace on the fishing piers too. I once witnessed a man pull in a magnificent specimen of a horseshoe crab. Did he put it back into the ocean? No. He proceeded to jump straight up into the air and smash down on the poor creature, crushing it to smithereens! My husband had to, literally, hold me back...

kid's a trooper

Saw this poor kid on the 10:00 PM local news following his emergency care. The barb was reported to have penetrated 5 inches, to what was visibly his midsection. After being surgically removed it left a wound the diameter of nickel (all on camera).

But there was a happy ending to all this as he sat fully alert celebrating his good fortune by eating pizza in his hospital bed. He had already rebounded by the time the news team found him, typical of a ten year old who has experienced even worse. His mother on the other hand was was already reliving what she could have done better (time spent together) had this turned out different.

Huh?

"No sting rays should not be killed as neither should skates!"

What college did you go to?

stingrays

google it or however ya'll get your info, stingrays are a huge problem in our waters!!they destroy shellfish, and destroy the eco-balance,their sting can be lethal.real fisherman are aware of this, and know how to disarm them without killing them, sorry a "tourist" was hurt, but if they had been educated about these undesirable preditors perhaps they would have been more cautious while gawking!!

dont worry

I really wouldn't worry about their insult. Speaking of generalizations, I would say a good majority of PilotOnline commenters fit the dim-witted description. Most fishermen (and other tradesmen) are smart people. Some have college degrees. I find it sad that people think that you must be formally educated to be either intellectually smart or full of common sense.

Crikey!

He is a lucky lad!

Glad the kid is ok. . .

Fishermen are generally littering idiots. A few years ago a bunch were chumming for sharks in Sandbridge. Not too smart.

Never understood the need to

Never understood the need to cut the barb, or tail off a ray and then throw them back into the water. Skates don't even have a barb yet people kill them too after being caught. I watch it happen all day at the piers. Just let the dang thing go. Unless your gonna eat it don't kill it.

Exactly. .

Why torture a poor ray, cut its barb off and toss it back in without it's defensive weapon. See earlier post about dimwitted fishermen.

Removing barb is as stupid as u can get

There is no need to harm a stingray-let it go. Seems like serious over-kill removing the barb -look what happened. The kid lost his liver!
