A 48-year-old Hampton woman pleaded guilty Monday to stealing federal grant money from Eastern Virginia Medical School.
Adrienne R. Boothe will be sentenced Dec. 13 and faces a maximum of 10 years in prison, a news release from the U.S. attorney's office in the Eastern District of Virginia said.
Employed at the medical school for more than 20 years, she was most recently a research associate for the Contraceptive Research and Development Program, known as CONRAD, the news release said, citing court documents. The program receives an annual grant from the U.S. Agency for International Development to perform research related to microbicide development and contraception. Sperm is collected for analysis, and donors are paid $30 per donation.
From January 2003 to January 2010, Boothe falsified donor reimbursement documents to include donations she knew had not occurred, the news release said. In total, she collected more than $150,000.
An internal investigation of the matter resulted in EVMS ending Boothe's employment in February.
