Chesapeake gets approval for second red-light camera

CHESAPEAKE

The next red-light cameras are set to go live at the intersection of George Washington and Military highways the first week of October.

The location is the second in the city to get Virginia Department of Transportation approval.

Cameras began snapping photos and recording video of red-light runners at Battlefield Boulevard/Atlantic Avenue and Campostella Road on Aug. 27.

Drivers documented running red lights at either location are forgiven for the first 30 days. The traffic violation comes with a $50 fine after that - a civil penalty that does not affect DMV records. City police and engineers choose intersections for red-light cameras based on crashes, traffic violations and whether it is feasible for officers to enforce the location.

cameras

Glad the cameras went in, especially because the experts picked which intersections were the most dangerous for drivers AND police to patrol. Keep up the good work.

More cameras= safer roads-

More cameras= safer roads- thank you for installing them!

Keep Em' coming

Good to see another camera coming. We need to keep adding them until red light running is a thing of the past.

@ jweisr

THIS is NOT New York, where they have sensor pads under the pavement that counts the number of cars sitting on it,and is guided by the time of day,so that the light WONT change when there is NO need for it to CHANGE!!!Oh! and this is the place where when they build (housing, roadways, bridges) they think about next years, instead of the coming years, and this is where they tear down one (Jordan) bridge while they are going thru the motions of putting up a new (Gilmerton) bridge, which by the way,Im curious to see how many lanes this new bridge will have..............type into your search engine "gilmerton project".........

Whew Whew !!!

Money money and mo money.Oh no, wait a minute, its all about safety. I forgot. How stupid of me.

Money, etc.

Option 1. Run the light, smile for the camera, pay the $50.00, remember not to run the light next time. Result? Maybe, lesson learned.
Option 2. Run the light, get yourself T-boned at the intersection, blame the other guy for not seeing you, (You'd lose), pay the entire cost of repairing the other guy's car plus medical expenses, lawyer fees, lose your insurance, try to get another car, (remember, you were at fault). Result? Maybe lesson learned.
Moral: Which lesson was cheaper?

Got one at the right intersection

This was one of the intersections in the map display.

Chesapeake , get your act together

ever drive south down Military Hwy and notice that Va Beach has the lights timed for the speed limit and then you cross the line to Chesapeake and it gets screwed up ? Chesapeake needs traffic engineers that are in this century. Why do I sit at the interchange at Robert Hall and wait for a light from the trailer park where there are no cars ? Then again at the 464 interchange. I guess the red light cameras will generate money when they too malfunction and nobody in the city knows how to fix them.

not two !!!

It's almost the 20th Century in Chesapeake.
