something to consider....
Charging juveniles as adults or threatening to do so unless those charged(not convicted, charged, there is a difference) plead guilty to what they are accused of is standard practice in our local courts. Not to mention the numerous detectives who's business it is to know how to coerce others to say what they need them to say, while others are allowed to go free for a price or their cooperation against another. There is no justice as long as the police and the prosecutors are allowed to hand pick who is charged and who is allowed to walk. Many others have committed far more heinous crimes than these and allowed to go about their lives in exchange for testifying against another. It's a big game and for anyone who doesn't believe this spend a few weeks downtown & you'll see what your tax dollars pay for.
All children that come from
All children that come from broken families, suffer abuse, do drugs do NOT go out and commit violent crimes. They know what they choose to do is violent and wrong. No leniency is warranted for a child or an adult who commits violent acts against others. when you act like animal you belong in a cage for a long time. Very few violent offenders who are released from prison fail to avoid going back due to violence. There are many people in our society who deserve our empathy and sympathy, but violent criminals deserve NONE! Criminals may be forgiven without having to be released.
Do the crime - do the time...
By all means for violent criminal acts. I think we have become too lenient and people think they can get away with any thing.
You Bet ....
You bet they need to be dealt with more harshly! Todays thugs, black, white, brown, or yellow, know that they're likely to get a slap on the wrist in the Juvenile Courts, it's so refreshing to see the Circuit Courts HAMMER'EM.
YES!
YES! Either them or their Parent/s. Make the parents responsible, make the parents make restitution.
Teenage long term jail sentencing
Regardless of the crime, teens tried as adults should receive full sentencing, however, there should be a parole clause that allows special consideration for early parole after 10 years - if the convicted youth has shown some kind of educational self improvement, has exhibited exceptional behavior, and has good rehabilitation evaluations while incarcerated.
you
You can't smoke untill you are 18, you can't drink untill you are 21, you can't rent a car untill you are 25. when is an adult an adult? Im sorry but if you are in high school then you are in high school you are not an adult (18). Yo ushould not be punished as an adult untill you can live with the perks of being an adult. It may rub some of you the wrong way but there needs to be a standard age of adult hood.
You
I somewhat agree with you that there should be a specific age that you either are or not an adult. You left out that at 17 you are considered mature enough to join the military and kill other human beings.
No, it is the level of the
No, it is the level of the crime that determines juvenile v. adult status. Juvenile does not have the same connotation it did even thirty years ago. Too many today, especially those who end up mired in the legal system, have but one thing on their minds. That is to conduct themselves at the basest level possible in all things. Disrespect, poor school performance, all manner of illegal activity, foul language the rule of the day, off the charts laziness, in other words, worthless. There is no excuse. They may be living in a dismal world largely not of their creation, but they are still living and have years of future ahead of them. They need to realize what a gift that is and work toward achieving the best all round quality life they can. The tools are within themselves if they bother to look, and the education needed is there for the taking. That's all that is needed. If they choose the other route, you play, you pay. End of story.
It's a privilege, not a right
Being allowed to live in the community is a privilege, not a right. To earn that "perk" you have to behave in a socially acceptable way. The fact that you believe smoking and drinking are "perks" is evidence of your immaturity, and until you can behave acceptably, you should be confined for whatever crimes you commit against the peace and dignity of the Commonwealth and its good citizens.
