Let me get this straight (no pun intended) ...
Captain Honors was NOT relieved for endangering his crew. He was NOT relieved for hazarding his vessel. He was NOT relieved for operational incompetence. He was NOT relieved for a sexual relationship. He was relieved for POSSIBLY hurting someone's feelings. OVER THREE YEARS AGO. Oh, he also had a successful command of a continuously forward deployed Ship in the interim between XO and CO tours on ENTERPRISE. What part did I get wrong?
happens every day
You have no idea how often this sort of thing happens that is not widely publicized. Everything is fine til someone gets a burr in his butt. One day everything is fine, the next a fine man/woman’s career is ruined.
I am ashamed.
All for a bit of comedy on a Saturday night? Seriously, does this make any sense? Who ever bowed to the whiners should be relieved of his command for being spineless.
It is a real shame that the high command in the Navy doesn’t have the guts to stand up and do what's right for our country; it doesn't take a genius to see that this is a huge waste of a valuable man and major asset to our country.
It is absolutely criminal to destroy this man’s career just to satisfy some whiny, incompetent, malcontents.
For once tell them to keep quiet!! You know this is wrong for the US Admiral. Do the right thing.
Leadership double standard
The name of this poll is:
"Should Capt. Owen Honors have lost command of the Enterprise for the "XO Movie Night" videos he produced in 2006-07?"
It should also read: "Should the Enterprise Co at the time, air wing commander and staff admiral also be held strickly accountable since they were on board and had to have known what was going on at the time."
"If" they are not held accountable then that bilges the Navy concept of the CO being ultimately responsible for what happens under his leadership.
My 2 Cents
I think none of these videos would have surfaced after 4 years if he had been named CO of a different carrier. As for the videos being offensive, I am sure that some crew members probably did find them offensive, but you can't please everyone. There are people out there that find smoking, Hooters, eating meat or even religion offensive. People are people, each with their own likes and dislikes.
And yes, I do think these videos were also leaked due to "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" being repealed.
Blown out of proportion
I am a Naval spouse of 12 years and one of the most important qualities military must possess is a sense of humor.
The only thing that I found out of line is the fact that they are inappropriate for an XO to be seen like that in the public eye. Had these videos stayed between the Naval personnel onboard the Enterprise, they would have been just fine. Many things happen onboard a ship that civilians will never understand, i.e Chief’s initiation.
The bottom line: they were created in the nature of comedy. They were NOT created out of malice or evil intent. They are jovial and meant for the sole purpose to help relieve the stress of the situations the crew must endure. Had an every-day-joe created these videos, NO ONE would care.
Did you hear the one about the broad in the beam navy wife?
I''m just trying to be funny. Created in the "nature of comedy".
Buh bye
He needed to go along with the rest of the CoC who allow this to pass as humor. Good leaders don’t make fools of themselves and the office they hold.
Bill Clinton and his
Bill Clinton and his scandal, did not fall under the unique UCMJ as does Honors and military personnel in this situation.
I can only spectulate on this but I will not be surprised that the videos resurfaced when Honors name came to light as a CO and the ship sailing made news.
Everything I've seen and read from the rank..
and file on the ship at that time states how appreciative they were for the then XO's efforts, he really did keep morale high. This whole episode stinks. I ask again, if the videos were deemed as OK 4 or 5 years ago, why are they sudden;y so toxic? At worst, you slap the guy's wrist and tell him no more. This sounds like someone had an axe to grind and the connections to extract some pain or perhaps revenge. A guy in his position, both on the way up and when he gets there, is going to make his share of enemies. This appears to be the case now. It is cowardly, but it is the reality of the times we live in.
