Portsmouth officer indicted in embezzlement case

A Portsmouth police officer has been indicted on an embezzling charge.

Robert Anthony Murray, 38, has been with the Portsmouth Police Department for 12 years, according to city records.

Detective Jan Westerbeck, a spokeswoman for the department, referred questions to State Police who conducted the investigation.

Murray was arrested Monday and is out on bond, according to Sgt. Michelle Anaya, a spokeswoman for the State Police. He is on administrative leave pending the outcome of the case, she stated in a news release.

According to court records, the alleged offense occurred on July 2, 2009. Anaya would not give more details on the case.
