Snacks
Also, the school schedules are not normal and are not easy to adapt to all the time. High School starts at 7:25 and lunch starts at 10, if they even have a lunch that day. My HS kids get home at 2:30 really hungry, ready to eat anything. Middle School starts at 9 and my son didn't start lunch until 1:20. So the schedules do have alot to do with thier hunger patterns and grabbing something quick to eat. I understand both sides and I would say having healthier choices might improve learning and health. That is until I see the kids walking in with energy drinks, sodas and junk purchased by thier parents.
Food
Parents can view every purchase thier kids make on www.myschoolbucks.com. They register with the child's school number and can add money to the child's account. Every purchase is made at the cafeteria line and can be seen online. I know if my child is buying a bag of doritos and 2 caprisuns each day instead of the full lunch. If they choose to buy an ice cream once a week I generally don't care but if they are buying junk everyday then I say something.
starters
For starters put all the fat students in one class and give them a fat teacher. I know there are a bunch of them. That way the fat students can see what their going to look like if they don't change their eating habits.
But if you do that...
...how will they ever learn the simplest of things...like the difference between "their" and "they're"?
Questions....
What about the high school kids who leave school at lunch to get fast food? Or the parents who show up at lunch time with bags of McDonald's?
Somewhere along the way we forgot how to say "no."
Too much Gov.
This is a local School Board issue . That way if the pubic in that area has a problem they can go right to the source of the problem.
Cut back State and eliminate Federal Dept of Education.
Contractual problems
The vendors have contracts with the City on what can be served. By limiting what is available, it would put undue restrictions on small business, thereby damaging the economy and sending the country into bankruptcy. Let the kids get fat, corporation profits MUST come first!
satire
Good satire!
Must be careful with sugar
Sugar can be both useful and harmful in a diet. Children that are not obese or morbidly obese should be allowed at least some sugary snacks. Low glucose levels(sugar crash), particularly in the evenings, can contribute to depression. Sugar can provide a lift that is alot cheaper than any presciption drug. On the other hand too much sugar may be a contributing factor in ADHD. The situation should be regulated based on the situation of the individual child.
But snacks in school? Really?
This is my point, that between class time is so you can get to your locker, get the appropriate supplies for the next class and get to it, with time for a drink from the water fountain, not the soda machine. Are they eating and drinking in their classes? Who is made to clean the messes that are inevitable? Who picks up the trash because the little darlings have never been taughtto walk the 3 feet to the trashcan?
