Fireworks truck explodes on Ocracoke; 3 dead, 2 hurt
The early morning blasts shook the remote Outer Banks island, killing three fireworks company workers and injuring two as they prepared for a show. The tragedy cast a pall over the holiday. "Everyone is very subdued," a resident said.

For teens, guns are cheap, available and everywhere
Even though it's unlawful for a teen to have a gun, there's little to stop them. "It was like you ain't nobody if you ain't got one," said one teen. Their abundance has turned teenage disputes into crime scenes.

Home sales swell and prices rise in April
Sales of existing homes picked up in South Hampton Roads in April, and home prices rose slightly as the spring selling season continued at a steady pace, according to a report released Friday. Real Estate Information Network Inc. released data showing that 841 homes sold last month, up 5.3 percent from March but 15.1 percent below the number sold in April 2008.
