Should agents be allowed to search any electronic device carried by travelers entering the country?

A diffucult subject
I can understand why most people voted to give the government this power. However, the law enforcement authorities should not be given full access to any electronic device without some probable cause. I do given them credit for catching this scum bag child pornographer but there has to be some justification. The constitution does say that a person or their property can not be searched without due process. If this guy were a known offender or even worst a known terriorist, he or she could have been temporarily held then a legal authority such as a judge could have been consulted and if there is enough probable cause, then a warrent to have the person and his or her possessions searched be issued. However, I have seen in the case of going into Military Bases that a large sign says something to the affect "Entry into this facility constitutes a consent for your vehicle and person to be searched." I guess that if they could let anyone who enters out country be aware of this, then by I guess by entering our country, you would automatically give consent to beign searched, but that would still not be following the constitution.
I don't understand
So not one of you yes votes would feel upset if you randomly got pulled over after a cruse or flight and got searched and your electronic devises temporarily confiscated? You are all for random detailed searches without cause? Do you actually think just because you have nothing to hide that this would not bother you? What if the police just randomly pick cars to stop without cause? Would that be OK as well? You would be OK giving up your time to this kind of thing? We would catch more criminals.
Revolting.
They caught this registered sex offender with a large amount of child porn. Seems the Customs agents should get a job well done for this catch. I pray for those young children who are suffering because people like this creep want to see this stuff. Should we worry about this sex offender's rights or the children who are being traumatized?
No problem
here as I see it because you have nothing to worry about if you haven't done anything wrong such as the guy that was just arrested for child porn did. Allot of information and damage can be done with today's electronic devices, heck an ipod can have up to 160 gigabyte hard drive which is more than enough to store software designed to infect computer systems or hold 60,000 child pornography photo's or plans for terrorists and the device can easily fit in a pocket. Thumb drives can hold have that amount and be slipped into a cigarette pack and have enough storage space to hold various photo's or files or software to do any kind of imaginable damage.
It's fair....
Seems fair enough to me. After all, if you have nothing to hide then why worry about it?
good idea
If a person is coming into our country, then yes, their body and everything they are carrying should be checked. This is a good example of why...a convicted sex offender carrying child porn. Sicko.
Electronic searches for persons entering U.S. from outside
NO, with the exception of individuals listed on felony lists or foreigners entering from at risk regions of the world.
If we're going to do this,
If we're going to do this, why not post armed guards on every corner? We could start subjecting citizens to random searches. Where is the line drawn? How many personal liberties are we willing to give up to feel "safe?"
Missing the Point
Officers at the border do not need a warrant and it has been that was for many many years. They have what you call "border search authority" where probable cause is not needed nor is mere suspcion. Crossing the border IN or OUT you are subject to questioning and search of your person, car, vessel, plane, luggage, electronic equiptment, etc... without a warrant. If you do not want to be searched or questioned then do not leave the great country of the United States. The warrantless search authority is not extended to any other law enforcement agency in the United States besides US Customs and Border Protection. Therefore, a warrant is still needed to search your home. If you are not doing anything wrong you have nothing to worry about!
I don't know. I wonder what
I don't know. I wonder what it will take for the 8 year olds in question to feel safe?
