A terrible lottery
I drove over the Jordan Bridge recently: to me, each vehicle going over it is like playing the lottery - or more like Russian roulette: which one is going to be the first to fall through? Who wants to take that kind of a chance? I know I won't again no matter how bad the Downtown Tunnel is backed up.
Dr Tabor
"Why not first see if the bridge, or its current location for a new one, can be sold to a private operator?"
A major international contractor with a local office looked at this in 2005. Did the study, alignment, toll study, etc. They company referred to also has a development group to finance. It did not fly on paper. There were too many alternate untolled roadways and it was determined if a viable toll rate was established, traffic counts would drop too low to sustain viability.
Our area is more interested in running unprofitable commercial operations (waterside), building public swimming pools and gyms, providing tax funds to wealthy developers, and building skate board parks than maintaining basic necessary infrastructure. Too bad for business eh?
That's easy
What were they thinking? That's easy. A bridge lasts a long time so they figured they would ignore the problem because someone else would likely be in charge by the time it got really bad. Government is inherently short sighted.
obviously poor city planning
You can't just build someting as important as a bridge, not do repairs and expect it to last forever. What were they thinking?
Twisted values of citizens and officials.
Considering that many residents of other cities use this bridge to go to work at the shipyard it seems those cities should contribute to the repair or replacement of this bridge. Instead our officials and our citizens demand that government spend tax payer money on new hotels, private condo buildings, and skateboard parks and other types of non-essential items. No wonder our area has such tremendous transportation issues.
Bad question
The question is very good because it doesn't specify if a replacement is included in the closure.
This is crazy!
As busy and congested and slow as our bridges and tunnels already are...Chesapeake wants to close one down!?
Instead of closing it
Why not first see if the bridge, or its current location for a new one, can be sold to a private operator?
Jordan Bridge Replacement
The Jordan Bridge should be closed, torn down, and rebuilt as a four lane high rise crossing connecting 464 in Chesapeake to 264 in Portsmouth. This would help take the load off the 64 high rise bridge and the Gilmerton bridge on Military Highway.
Jordon Bridge Closing
Why hasn't this invaluable bridge been kept up to date? Other priorities deamed more important than the taxpayers needs.Every thing has to be maintained why hasn't money been budgeted for the maintenance of this bridge over the years? Or tolls raised to help pay for the upkeep? I see a big lack of foresight on the powers that be. I have no problem paying the tolls I absolutely hate the tunnels. It was deamed some 80 years ago that this bridge was needed and now more than ever with all the traffic jams at the other tunnels. How sad and senceless to just say tear it down.
More Tunnel Traffic
Closing the bridge will only exacerbate the gridlock at the (already) over-used downtown tunnel...don't close the bridge!
