Poll Question

Should Chesapeake, Norfolk and Virginia Beach explore combining some operations and programs to cut costs?
Disclaimer: This is an unscientific sampling of users.

City

Too much duplication of resources. Who said the City is responsible for your trash pick up? Who said the City is responsible to transport you kid to school? Who said the city is responsible to provide your kid with a ball field to play on? And on And on And on.

SPSA and HRT

First things that comes to mind are SPSA and HRT. Do we REALLY need another multi-city organization to misappropriate our money and then beg for more?

is tidewater a regio n

Why just VB, Chesapeake and norfolk?

Oh. Because the developers only mandate and control those city governments. The other cities in TIDEWATER are smart enough to not be puppets.

Follow the track record

Given the track record of Virginia Beach's neighbor to the West, who in thier right mind would want to merge, besides Norfolk of course! You may have to invite your troubled brother to dinner but you don't have to invite him to stay!

Small Town Mentality

We need to get rid of the seven seperate little towns and merge into Hampton Roads. We have missed out on so many growth opportunities because of the Good Ole Boyz in one city or another (Usually Norfolk and Va. Beach) whine they want the project named the Norfolk Whatever or named for Va. Beach Grand Plan etc. This would include the NASCAR Race track we missed, hte horse track we missed, the new major airport hub we missed, the baseball team we missed, get the picture?
Get over yourselves folks, you ALL live in Hampton Roads.

You get

what you pay for -- most necessary city services are already stretched. Combining them would worsen matters.

DISCOUNT

I'd bet they can get a great quantity discount on toilet paper.

Balanced Budgets are required - Shared services are not new

The deficit comment is a moot point. Virginia law requires localities to approve balanced budgets on an annual basis. The Commonwealth has to as well. Only the Feds can get away with deficit spending.

Hampton Roads already has many shared servcies and hundreds of cooperative service agreements. Most of the functions of our water, wastewater (sewage), solid waste (trash), are transit already consolidated. At a minimum, purchasing and 911 service should be shared. Why let City boudaries dictate how they are carried out?

Doesn't play well with others

I'd be all for it, assuming Virginia Beach is left out. Not that they'd want to participate, anyway.

I'd

be all for it, assuming norfolk is left out. They are so far in the red, why should another city bail them out, join together forgetaboutit
