Should city employees face fines if caught running red lights in a city vehicle by a camera?

No Brainer
A better question to ask is why do our cities allow wreckless drivers to use city owned vehicles. If an employee of a private company got a red light ticket, the company would probably take it out of their pay check and then they'd be fired. I wonder how many city or state employees have been disciplined for the infraction...

I'm sorry that was suppose to say leading by example, my sentences ran together, too much going through my head about this topic.
This is ridiculous.
As a city employee, your suppose to be making the city a better place, or atleast doing what you can. Ever hear of following by example? Not too mention, what kind of people are we hiring for the city, if they can't follow the laws themselves?!!?
Why does this question...
have to be asked at all? A better question: what colection of dolts and morons omitted city employees to begin with? Any true emergency situation can be verified by city resources to determine if running a red light was in response to one. This reeks of what we get from our elected officials in Washington, in that they don't have to live with the consequences of the laws they inmpose on the rest of us, the city has decided to 'look out for their own' while dropping the hammer on the rest of the public. Does anyone wonder why govt and the people they employ at any level are viewed with such profound disrespect?
Close call
I recently had a close call at a red light without a camera. The light had turned yellow and I had enough time to come to a normal stop without jamming on brakes. But the pick up behind me decided he didn't like that and gunned his vehicle and swerved around me, almost catching the corner of my rear bumper. As he hit the intersection, the light turned red. The REAL solution is for everyone to slow down and heed the red lights and be prepared to come to a stop when the light turns yellow before getting to the intersection. Then those that are turning, you to come to a complete stop FIRST, and then proceed with your right turn on red AFTER STOPPING COMPLETELY. Same goes for STOP signs.
The Synicate of VA Beach
Once upon a time there was a mall in America. This mall was afraid a new mall in another city could decrease the value of its square footage.
What did the VB mall owners do? They pressured the city into using your tax dollar to rescue their tax revenues. The mall told them they would vacate the one of the highest value per square foot retail mall in the U.S.
Spineless!
The red light cameras are run by a private entity paid by for by your tax dollar. The installation of these cameras reduces costs on liability insurance the city must carry. Essentially... they are shaking their constituents down to keep your money in their coffers.
They don't want to steal from members of their 'family'... just yours.
red lights
they should be fined and if you lend your vehicle, it is your responcibility to handle the fine the way you see fit. If you can not than you have learned a valuable lesson. One last thing: do any of us believe this will change the cities mind.
So if the law requires the
So if the law requires the owner to be fined, why aren't the fines being passed along to the cities that own these vehicles? They can take it out of the workers' pay or take other appropriate disciplinary action (i.e. fire them).
The only exception should be for emergency vehicles with their lights on.
Ha....
And the 6% that voted NO are probably actually the city workers themselves!!
Every city vehicle has #'s for your convience.
Once again the stereotyping. I voted YES and I work for the CITY. Try to understand this theory. It's not the majority of drivers breaking these laws no matter who's vehicle they are driving. It's just that 10-15% with the mindset of "the laws are for everyone else except me". Most every day, during my same time every AM drive to work, there are cars I can point out that I know will run the light or not stop before turning right. If one of these happened to be a city vehicle I would make the call myself. All city vehicles are equiped with license plates and vehicle #'s, and some even the phone number. And all city employees have an I.D.,ususlly displayed if you happen to be able to get it. So do your civic duty as the fine upstanding citizen you are and report it. But you will need to put some walk(or phone call) into your talk to accomplish that. Trust me enough complaints against that 10-15% of city employees would have results you will probably never hear about but will definately have consequences for someone. So if you really think the city employees are all getting away with breaking laws file the Citizens complaint.
no
I believe that these fines are patently unconstitutional and should be challenged by every one who receives one. We have been a nation that holds the criminal accountable, not the property owner. Imagine you loan your car to a friend and he runs three in one day and you get the fines because of that. Is it fair now. Red light cams are nothing but a scam for the city to make money. What's the point if no one gets points on their record?
You don't know the POINT? My explanation................
The point is to stop the RED LIGHT RUNNERS from causing accidents, injuring people, crippling people, and killing ppeople. Why is that so hard for some to comprehend?
Personally, I think I'd want
Personally, I think I'd want to know if someone driving my vehicle was running red lights!
are you kidding me?
This is one of the best ideas that the city has ever had. I live right near an intersection that has just had a camera installed, which has always been a horrible intersection with lots of red light runners and accidents. You should now see how everyone stops, and for the few who don't feel that they have to obey the law, here's a ticket. Another simple solution for you, simple being the word of the day, don't let your friends drive your car.
The courts have already decided
The issue of constitutionality was ran through the courts years ago. The courts decided that the cameras were equal to a police car being there and just an extension of police presence and nothing more.
I don't know how many times you drive the red light intersections, but as one who does, I have to say they are all much better now with the cameras.
If you don't like the idea of getting a ticket because of someone else driving your car there's a real simple solution for that: don't loan your car out.
Then I'd say....
Then I'd say don't lend your car to anyone. I think your feelings might change when your car is wrecked because of running a red light.
If I'm in my company car and I run a red light, I will pay. It's even written into the policy that employees are responsible for any parking tickets or moving violations.
A change to the law is all that is needed.
If you loan your car out
and your "Friend" runs red lights, If they are a true friend, they will pay the fine for you..If they don't, then they are not a friend, and you should take them to court to get reimbursed.
isn't that nice
it must be so nice to be mediocre if not incompetent and score a government job. no longer accountable and above the law. good for them. god bless the new ruling class. i'm sure they will go to the front of the line in out new socialist medical system too.
No one's above the law
All should pay if they break the law.
