Should Virginia Beach be allowed to build tall Oceanfront buildings if they could block a military radar station?
Disclaimer: This is an unscientific sampling of users.

Radar/ Virginia Beach buildings

It does not take a rocket scientist to realize that planes make noise, so people moved to the Oceana area then complained about the noise that the planes made. Now City officals want to build these skyscraper on the beach, any 8th grade student would know that radar would be blocked by these obstructions. This will bring up again questions of who is paying these officals, the tax payer or the developers???

NAS Oceana

Well said Diamondjack. I wholeheartedly concur! I think they should move NAS Oceana and the Radar Station to Mayport, Fl along with the USS George H.W. Bush CVN just to teach these people a lesson. They put on this big show to protect the Navy's presence in Hampton Roads but are constantly putting up obstacles. All they care about are the tax dollars the Navy brings them.

Profit over National Defense

You would think that after 9/11 this would be a no brainer. However, there are always people who seem to be some more interested in profit over National Defense.

the Navy should have already explained to the city that

the hotels are incompatible. Building that kind of large gathering of people in those noise zones is considered incompatible and would add to the total number of dwellings already impacting the mission of Oceana. Oceana's pilots simply cannot train the way they are suppose to at Oceana thanks to the existing incompatible development, this simply makes Oceana "more worse". Virginia Beach Local Govt (VA BCH LG) is so used to getting their way regarding the military that they now think they can tell the FAA to adjust their way of doing business, as well.
That RADAR site should not HAVE to be moved as the buildings should not be built in the first place. I would speculate, guess, ASSume, whatever that one of the reason why the golf ball was put there was because Oceana would keep the buildings low. I bet a risk assessment vs growing buildings was done for many sites and where the golf ball is was determined to be the best place for it. If VABCH LG supports our Navy by keeping incompatible development from happening, the FAA is protected as well. VABCH LG, do the right thing, stop the incompatible development at all those sites.

Money

Let them build the tall hotels, but only after they developers have paid to move the radar. The taxpayer should not pay 1 cent of the cost to move the radar. If the developers are willing to pay for it, I'm all for it.

Oceana 's Radar Tower

If the Beach wants to allow a blockage to the military's defense mission for the East Coast, it should first notify the developers of costs related to relocation of the tower at its own expense.

move the Navy

I am all for the Navy Moving out of VB. Then there would be plenty of room to build everything the money grabbers want. Just think there would be approx. 5,000 homes for sale at one time, maybe even 3,000 to 4,000 apartments. It should not take VB less than 30 years to tear them down and build Hotels for people that come for 3 months of the year!. If any one thinks that VB can survive on the tourist then they must have more info than I do. The NAVY is what has carried VB thru the bad times and they will again. I would like to see the Commander of Oceana do a base lock down and put all VB business off limit's for 10-15 days and see how much the business's lose!.

Good Idea

I couldn't agree with you more. Virginia Beach seems to want the money that Oceana brings but none of the noise and other distractions such as early warning radar. I would say to do it for about 30 days and then watch the folks in the city come crying.

Virginia Beach v. FAA

Is our city council nuts? The Hampton Roads area has been a military region for decades. It is the military that has kept this region fairly recession-proof. Now it seems that the city is so intent on putting money in the hands of developers that it has ignored what is right for the local economy and the safety of our nation. As a tax payer, I do not feel that the city should be requiring the Federal Government to spend tax-payer monies to satisfy the city's use of local tax monies for developers. The city is already in debt just as is the Federal Government. This city already cannot afford the urban sprawl it has created.

Read The Story

It is the FAA, not the Navy, that said they will deny the applications. The radar just happens to be at Oceana. I know there is another of these radar sites in the Pine Barrens on Long Island, NY that is run by the Air Force.

Also, it is not just one building, the city is proposing 5 buildings.
