It's pretty funny that people are surprised when jet noise is brought up.
It's also funny that Virginia Beach is willing to send someone to jail for up to 6 months on the second offense with a fine of up to $1,000 for being too loud. Considering that prisoners cost $20,000-30,000 a year I don't think anybody's going to win on this one. So how about just give tickets and let the people keep making donations.

This will be a good test of how the VB City Council listens to their residents.
Living in Norfolk, I think we're resigned to having to put up with noise because it will take police to enforce the laws & we just don't see them patrol much in our lower middle class 'hood unless there's a violent crime recently occured. (If ya think this ain't so, just drive thru & look at all the cars blocking sidewalks & having outdated inspection stickers/license decals.)
I'd bet noise isn't a problem in the big boys' neighborhoods though (Mayor, Vice Mayor, etc.)
Hey, does anyone know if it is considered Child Abuse for someone to blare their car stereo w/ a baby or toddler aboard?

You can choose where you live and scout the areas before you move there, thus I have no sympathy for those who complain about jet noise. Emergency vehicles HAVE to let people know they are coming and to clear traffic - no sympathy there either. People playing loud music and especially heavy bass music you CAN'T get away from easily. The music is damaging to people's hearing and it is highly irritating. It is also the cause of road rage and violence problems around clubs - all one has to do is look at where such violent acts occur. With car stereos, no one should be able to hear anyone else's music from three feet away from a vehicle. No one should be able to inflict their music or entertainment noise on anyone else.

Yes, there should be stronger legislation providing a much needed update to guidelines for noise pollution. The booming cars are bad enough, but, there is a large church on Great Neck Road that periodically booms evening noises that not only permeate the serene outdoors by the walls of my home more than three quarters of a mile away. I moved to this area for the peace and quiet - before the new church was built. I'm now moving up in years and ill afford to move again. Please make the noise ordinance a great deal more stringent.

If they have a noise ordinance for car radios, they should have a jet noise ordinance, too. Can't be busting people for music when its okay for jets to rattle windows and bust eardrums.

Well said dennisp. These morons should also be charged with public profanity for playing those nasty songs so loud in public. A few years ago I had a run in with teens across from my street who were playing obscene music on there boom box.
My young granddaughter was visiting at the time. As you can imagine, I made dam sure they turned it off!

This is one of those situations where (local) government action is needed so irate citizens won't take matters into their own hands.
Just as we would have even more carnage were it not for traffic signs 'cause many drivers couldn't care less whom might have the right of way, we need laws to control noise levels due to people who are clueless about the damage "db's" eventually do & don't give a flip that they might disturb others.
Moronic drivers blast their sometimes sexist, often racist & nearly always profane "music" at levels guaranteed to damage not only their hearing but that of the poor little kids often seen riding in the same car. Nor can they hear emergency vehicles (the reason drivers can't legally wear headsets.)
Yes, not only VB but all cities, towns, etc., should have noise limits & enforce them strongly. Fellow taxpayers: we're gonna have the pleasure of paying for hearing aids for these fools someday.

Everyone has a definition of noise

Noise hypocrisy
If they have a noise ordinance for car radios, they should have a jet noise ordinance, too. Can't be busting people for music when its okay for jets to rattle windows and bust eardrums.

Noise ordnance
This is another "feel good" proposal. Will we have to equip our police officers with noise meters?
