The Chesapeake Environmental Improvement Council and Chesapeake Master Gardeners will celebrate Arbor Day by giving away free tree seedlings from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday while supplies last.
Various species will be distributed at three locations: Russell Memorial Library, 2808 Taylor Road in Western Branch (black alder, bald cypress and redbud); the Chesapeake Arboretum, 624 Oak Grove Road in Great Bridge (Kousa dogwood, Washington Hawthorn and indigo bush); and the Major Hillard Library, 824 Old George Washington Hwy. in Deep Creek (red twig dogwood, common pear and shortleaf pine).
The CEIC also could use some help planting some of the trees in public places. Organizers especially need a team leader volunteer to supervise an Arbor Day tree planting Saturday at Western Branch's Crossings Park, 4328 Munford Lane, near Bruce Road.
Five other teams of volunteers will plant trees at public sites in Great Bridge, Crestwood, Hickory and South Norfolk. The Western Branch team leader's duties include making sure materials and supplies are delivered to the site, supervising the packaging of materials/supplies for return after the completion of planting, having volunteers sign a safety agreement and recruiting volunteers to be members of Arbor Day Tree Care Teams.
