CHESAPEAKE
Two people were displaced Wednesday after a fire destroyed a single-family home in the Hickory section of Chesapeake.
Firefighters were dispatched at 10 a.m. to the single-story home on Long Ridge Road, at the rural intersection of Carolina Road, said Capt. Steve Johnson, a fire department spokesman. No one was injured in the blaze, which completely destroyed the home.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, Johnson said. A smoke detector alerted residents to the blaze, Johnson said.
The homeowner, Dorothy Blount, said she had lived there since 1976. Blount, who sat in her front yard as firefighters battled the blaze, said she had no time to save any of her possessions.
Virginia Beach firefighters were dispatched to assist Chesapeake firefighters. A U.S. Navy crash truck, from nearby Fentress Airfield, also was dispatched to the scene, Johnson said.
There were no hydrants in the area so firefighters had to haul in water to fight the blaze, Johnson said. In addition to water, firefighters used foam to extend their ability to fight the blaze.
Firefighters also had to contend with the dangers of propane tanks, aerosol cans and ammunition on the burning property. The residents were provided a “victim aid kits,’’ which was one of 50 kits with blankets and personal hygiene products donated by local girl and boy scouts to the fire department, Johnson said.
