Re 'Suffolk fires embattled assessor' (news, May 8):
Not one Suffolk City Council member had the fortitude to stand up for Assessor Maria Kattmann and to take the heat from the waterfront property owners.
An outside consultant hired by the council found she was a good leader, but her department was understaffed and unable to inspect all properties.
Were additional employees authorized? Should her office inspect every property every year? Is that even possible?
Kattmann was being fair by trying to bring the assessments on waterfront property up to market value.
For how many years did inland property owners pay taxes on the market value for their land, while waterfront property owners were not paying their share?
How can the council terminate someone for actually doing what the office is supposed to do?
