PORTSMOUTH
Fallen soldiers, sailors, Marines and Coast Guard members will be honored on Memorial Day in ceremonies at the Conaway Cemetery at the Naval Medical Center in Portsmouth.
The guest speaker for the program on May 26, which will begin at 9 a.m., will be Capt. Richard Berkey, commander of the Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth.
The Conaway Cemetery is the final resting place for more than 850 fallen warriors from seven countries as well as Union and Confederate service members, said Jacky Fisher, a hospital spokeswoman.
The flags of each service member’s country will be placed at his or her grave by members of Cub Scout packs 16 and 48 from Suffolk and Brownie Troop 641, Great Bridge Service Unit.
The ceremony will include the placing of a memorial wreath and Marine Lt. Col. Jeffrey C. Christman (Ret.), will play “Amazing Grace” on the bagpipes.
Anyone with base access and their family members are welcome to attend. The event is conducted and cosponsored by the Tidewater Area Council of the Fleet Reserve Association and Ladies Auxiliary.
In case of inclement weather, the ceremony will be held in the Building 3 second floor auditorium.
The ceremonies will precede the annual Portsmouth Memorial Day Parade.
