With 75-year history, once flourishing men's wear company closing

The company that ran Fine’s Men’s Shops, which in 75 years experienced prosperity, bankruptcy and a back-and-forth shift in ownership, is closing. Mitchell Fine, the chairman and chief executive officer of STAMOR Corp., confirmed Thursday that the company is closing. He declined to say why. The first Fine’s store opened in downtown Norfolk in 1933. The business grew to more than 80 stores, catering to young men, in the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast. The company now has four stores, known as StreetStuff, Fine said. The closest, he said, is in Patrick Henry Mall in Newport News. The stores, Fine said, will probably close between June 30 and July 15. Fine’s grandfather, Ruby, and his brother, Leon, opened the first Fine’s store in a 600-square-foot space on Granby Street and College Place. Shirts went for less than $2, ties for 55 cents.
