Great Dismal Swamp fire 50% contained, continues to spew smoke

Earlier today, the Dismal Swamp fire was 50 percent contained and spanned 3,096 acres, according to officials.

Firefighters worked to install high-volume pumps that would hydrate the soil in order to protect the perimeter of the fire, said Larry Helmerick, public information officer at the incident command center.

“The smoke is still going to be bothering us for awhile,” Helmerick said.

Brian Hurley, a meteorologist with at the National Weather Service in Wakefield, said Hampton Roads could experience periods of smoke at least through Monday night. Until then, smoke will seem most concentrated at night. During the day, heat tends to lift the smoke higher into the air, he said.

After that, winds could push the smoke back towards the Outer Banks, he said.
