Hampton police say dead 19-year-old was among robbers

HAMPTON

Police say a 19-year-old who died Wednesday of a gunshot wound was among three men who attempted to rob a man in the 2000 block of Cunningham Drive on Tuesday about 9:20 p.m.

The robbery victim struggled with the armed suspect, Hampton police said, and the weapon discharged, striking the armed suspect in the upper torso.

Police said the remaining two suspects then drove the wounded man to Sentara CarePlex, where he was pronounced dead. Police were alerted to the wounded man's arrival at the hospital.

The dead man was identified by police late Thursday as Maurice Edward Simpson, 19, of Newport News.

Dejon Jamal Middleton, 20, of the 700 block of Crossing Court in Newport News, has been charged in connection with the Cunningham Drive episode with one count of robbery, one count of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and one count of possession of marijuana. Jamaal Orlando Wilson, 21, also a resident of the 700 block of Crossing Court, has been charged with one count of robbery and one count of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
