New program to aid seniors at accident scenes

The sheriff’s office will launch a new program tomorrow to give emergency responders quick access to medical information for senior citizens involved in car crashes.

Those who sign up for File of Life For Your Vehicle will keep red packets in their glove boxes that include insurance records, medical conditions and other information. A red sticker on the back window will alert fire and rescue workers that the driver is a program participant.

File of Life has long been used in homes in the area, said Capt. Steve Johnson of the Chesapeake Fire Department. Cards are kept in a red magnetic pouch and placed on the refrigerator.

Emergency workers have arrived at the scene of accidents to find senior citizens confused or unconscious, according to a sheriff’s office news release. A $50,000 grant from Sentara Health Foundation will pay for the vehicle program, which is free to participants.

A program is planned for 10 a.m. tomorrow at City Hall. Anyone interested receiving a File of Life packet is asked to contact the Chesapeake Sheriff’s Office at 382-8824.
