Re 'Tax energy inefficiency,' letter, June 27:

The writer appears to be in favor of using punitive taxation to force Americans into behaving the way he would like to see us behave.

I thought the purpose of the tax system was to raise revenue for the government. The writer would convert taxation into a weapon to be used to force people into line. It sounds more radical than the Stamp Act or the tea tax, and you see what that got us.
