Norfolk firefighter suffers leg injury in fire on W. 28th St.

NORFOLK

Firefighters were on the scene of a house fire at 316 W. 28th Street Friday afternoon.

The fire involved the second story of the house, according to Norfolk Fire-Rescue spokesman Jack Goldhorn. It was reported at 3:35 p.m.

Firefighters contained the fire in about 15 minutes, Goldhorn said. A firefighter was taken to a hospital for a leg injury. He was expected to be treated and released, Goldhorn said.

Wanda Whitehead, who lives with her family on the lower level apartment in the house, said she was home alone when she smelled something. She went outside, and neighbors pointed out the fire on the second floor, she said.

"Smoke was just blazing from upstairs," she said. She said she was not sure what kind of damage the fire caused to her possessions.

Whitehead, her husband and six children were displaced from the lower level. Two adults were displaced from the upper level. The American Red Cross was called to help.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
