VIRGINIA BEACH
Police have identified a man who died Sunday night in a crash on Wolfsnare Road and announced charges against the driver of the vehicle in which the man was riding.
Police were called about the crash, in the 2100 block of Wolfsnare, shortly after 11 p.m. after a Honda Accord ran off the left side of the road and hit a tree, police wrote in a news release.
John Julius Korte, 20, had been a passenger in the front seat of the car and was pronounced dead at the scene, police wrote.
Known as Jack Korte, he was the volleyball All-Tidewater Player of the Year in 2006. The 2007 Cox High School graduate led his volleyball team to the state championship.
Korte lived in the 1800 block of Duke of York Quay and police said he wasn’t wearing a seatbelt on Sunday night.
Cameron Paul Crockett, 20, of the 900 block of Earl of Essex Arch, was taken to a hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening, according to the police news release. Crockett, who was behind the wheel and was wearing a seatbelt, was charged with aggravated involuntary manslaughter, driving under the influence of alcohol, refusing a breath test, illegal possession of alcohol and driving without a license.
Crockett, who was denied bond, will be taken from the hospital to jail, police said.
Investigators believe Crockett lost control of the car and that speed and alcohol were factors in the crash, the release says. Wolfsnare runs between Great Neck and First Colonial roads.
